Renting an automatic car in İzmir

İzmir is the largest city on the Aegean. With the ring road from the airport to the centre, the narrow streets of Konak and Alsancak, heavy evening traffic between Karşıyaka and Bornova and the hills of Buca, an automatic car makes everyday driving noticeably easier. Moving through stop-and-go traffic without a clutch or gear changes is a real relief, especially after a long flight.

Duray Rent a Car has been renting cars at İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport since 1997. Our fleet includes automatic cars from compact city cars and SUVs to large family cars and a 9-seat minivan. On this page you will find what you need to know about renting an automatic car, the automatic cars in our fleet, how prices work and the routes you can drive from the airport.

Who should rent an automatic car?

An automatic is no longer just a matter of comfort; for many drivers it is a must. In Europe, and especially in Germany, more and more drivers take their test in an automatic car every year. Their licence is often restricted to automatics, so they cannot drive a manual car. That is also why many expatriate Turks visiting for the summer filter for automatic cars first when booking.

Automatic cars are most popular with:

  • Those spending a lot of time in the city: Stop-and-go driving all day in Konak, Alsancak, Karşıyaka and Bornova is far less tiring with an automatic.
  • Long-distance drivers: On long routes such as Çeşme, Kuşadası or Bergama, an automatic lets the driver concentrate on the road.
  • Drivers whose licence is restricted to automatics: The only option for drivers who passed their test in an automatic abroad.
  • Families: With a full boot and children in the back, not having to change gear makes driving safer and calmer.
  • First-time drivers in Turkey: While you get used to the traffic of an unfamiliar city, it helps to keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road.

Automatic cars in our fleet

Below are the automatic models in our fleet. To see which cars are available on your dates and their current prices, simply choose your dates in the form at the top of the page. Bookings are made by car group; if no car of the same group is available, you get a car from a higher group.

Renault Clio Petrol Automatic

One of the most practical choices for the city. Its hatchback body makes parking easy, and with 5 seats and room for 3 suitcases it is enough for couples or small families. The petrol engine and automatic gearbox are at ease on short, stop-and-go drives between Alsancak and Konak.

Opel Corsa Petrol Automatic

With its compact size and automatic gearbox, the Corsa suits those staying in the city centre and travelling light. The 5-seater has room for about 2 suitcases; ideal for short city breaks and business trips.

Fiat Egea Diesel Automatic

A saloon body, a large boot and the low fuel consumption of a diesel engine in one. The 5-seat Egea with room for 4 suitcases is a frequent choice for families and long journeys. On routes like Çeşme or Kuşadası the diesel's fuel advantage really shows.

Hyundai Elantra Diesel Automatic

For those looking for a more comfortable saloon. With a diesel engine and automatic transmission it is economical and relaxed on long journeys; the boot takes 4 suitcases, plenty for business trips and couples.

Renault Duster Petrol Automatic

With its SUV body and high driving position, the Duster is comfortable for winding, hilly roads such as those to Karaburun, Bozdağ or Kemalpaşa. With 5 seats and room for 5 suitcases it also suits larger families.

Renault Austral Petrol Automatic

The newer, better-equipped SUV in our fleet. A boot for 5 suitcases and a roomy cabin, for those who value comfort on long holidays.

Fiat Doblo Diesel Automatic

With its spacious cabin and high roof, the Doblo is practical for families travelling with lots of luggage. The 5-seater has room for 5 suitcases and easily takes a pushchair, bags and beach gear.

Fiat Ulysse 8+1 Automatic

A 9-seat minivan for large families or groups, with automatic transmission, a diesel engine and room for 8 suitcases. It is mostly booked for longer rentals; for availability, see our monthly car rental page.

For some models the minimum driver age is 22 or 23; it is shown on the car's detail page when you select it. For general terms, read our rental conditions page.

Automatic or manual?

The daily rate for an automatic car is a little higher than for a manual car of the same class, because both the cars and their maintenance cost more. Compare current daily prices for automatic cars in the table above and for manual cars in the table on our home page.

Ask yourself these questions when choosing a transmission:

  • Is your licence restricted to automatics? If so, there is no choice to make: you need an automatic car.
  • How much of your driving will be in the city? If you will spend most of the day in central İzmir, you will notice the difference immediately.
  • How many people and how much luggage? If you need a lot of luggage space, look at automatic cars with a large boot such as the Egea, Duster or Doblo.
  • How flexible is your budget? If you will only make short trips in the city, a manual car may be cheaper.

Today's automatic gearboxes have largely closed the fuel-consumption gap with manual cars. Our diesel automatic models (Egea, Elantra, Doblo) are especially economical on long journeys.

Tips for driving an automatic in İzmir

City traffic

Traffic in İzmir is heaviest on weekday mornings and evenings. The ring road is usually the fastest way from the airport to the city centre. Around Konak, Alsancak and Kemeraltı the streets are narrow and one-way; an automatic makes slow manoeuvring there much easier.

Parking

Street parking can be hard to find in Alsancak and along the Kordon. Paid car parks save time and the risk of a parking fine. The compact Clio and Corsa make it easier to fit into tight spaces.

Motorways and tolls

Some motorways and bridges around İzmir are tolled; tolls are paid via HGS. Fines for traffic offences, including passing through the wrong lane on the motorway, are charged to the renter named in the contract. Ask our office for details when you pick up the car.

Fuel

Return the car with the same fuel level as at pick-up. We recommend leaving a little earlier for the airport so you can refuel on the way. Whether the car runs on petrol or diesel is shown in the car name and in your booking summary.

Routes from the airport in an automatic car

İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport is close to the finest holiday areas of the Aegean. Pick up your car at the terminal and set off straight away. Distances and times are approximate and depend on traffic.

  • Çeşme and Alaçatı: About 90 km from the airport. An easy motorway drive; allow for weekend traffic in summer.
  • Selçuk and ancient Ephesus: About 60 km. Şirince and the House of the Virgin Mary are on the same route.
  • Urla: About 60 km. An ideal day trip for the vineyard roads and Urla harbour.
  • Seferihisar: About 50 km. Sığacık and quiet bays.
  • Foça: About 85 km. A historic seaside town on the northern Aegean coast.
  • Bergama: About 125 km. A long but rewarding drive to ancient Pergamon.
  • Konak and the city centre: About 20 km. Kemeraltı, the Clock Tower and the Kordon.

How to drive an automatic

Never driven an automatic before? Don't worry, it only takes a few minutes to get used to. Automatic cars have no clutch pedal, only an accelerator and a brake. You use both pedals with your right foot; your left foot stays free.

The gear selector usually has these positions:

  • P (Park): Used when the car is parked and when starting the engine. Before leaving the car, shift to P and apply the handbrake.
  • R (Reverse): For reversing. Make sure the car has come to a complete stop before selecting R.
  • N (Neutral): Used when the car is being towed or for short stops; not needed in normal driving.
  • D (Drive): For driving forward. The car changes gear by itself; you only focus on the accelerator and brake.

In most cars you need to press the brake pedal to move the selector out of P or R and to start the engine. Many models have hill-start assist: when you lift your foot off the brake on a slope, the car does not roll back for a moment. This helps on the steep streets of Buca and Karşıyaka. On long descents, use the low gear or engine-braking option described in the owner's manual to spare the brakes.

At pick-up you can ask our team to quickly show you the gear selector and features such as hill-start assist. Adjusting the seat, mirrors and air conditioning before you set off takes only a few minutes; all automatic cars in our fleet have air conditioning.

Picking up the car at İzmir Airport

We have two offices at İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport: one in the international and one in the domestic arrivals terminal. When you choose your arrival terminal while booking, your car is prepared at that office. Entering your flight number helps us track delays and changes to your flight.

What to bring at pick-up:

  • Your valid driving licence and, if it is not in the Latin alphabet, an international driving permit.
  • Your ID card; your passport if you are not a Turkish citizen.
  • A credit card in your name with enough limit for the deposit.
  • Your boarding pass (may be requested for airport pick-ups).

When you pick up the car, check the bodywork, windows and tyres together with our team; any existing scratches or damage are recorded on the handover form. Check the fuel level, as you will return the car with the same level. If you will arrive much later than your booking time and cannot be reached, the booking may be cancelled; if you are delayed, simply call the office.

Insurance and protection packages

Mandatory third-party liability insurance is included in every rental. The damage cover included in the price varies by offer; details are in your contract and handover form. You can buy extra cover at our office when you pick up the car:

  • LCF protection: Covers punctured or split tyres not caused by an accident, and broken glass, headlights, indicators and wing mirrors.
  • Mini Damage package: Covers scratches up to 7.5 cm, dents up to 2.5 cm, rim scratches up to 4 cm and stone chips in the glass up to 5 mm.
  • Full Cover: Includes both the LCF and Mini Damage packages.
  • IMM cover: Provides third-party cover above the legal limits of the mandatory insurance in the event of an accident.

In the event of an accident, do not move the car; an accident report must be completed or the nearest police or gendarmerie contacted, and our 24/7 line +90 232 274 12 16 must be informed. Remember to take several photos at the scene showing the number plate.

Returning the car

You return the car at the return location and time stated in your contract. To return it elsewhere, use “Choose a different return location” when booking; a fee may apply for returns in other districts or cities. If you return the car 2 hours or more after the agreed time, one extra day is charged. To extend the rental, let the office know at least 24 hours before it ends; extensions are charged at the current price on that day.

When returning the car at the airport, allow time before your flight for the car check and handover. Make sure you have not left any personal belongings in the glovebox or the boot.

Requirements for renting an automatic car

Our general rental conditions also apply to automatic cars:

  • You must be at least 21 and have held a licence for at least 3 years; for some automatic models the minimum age is 22 or 23.
  • You need a credit card in the renter's name. At pick-up, a hold of 5,000 to 10,000 TL is placed on the card depending on the car group; debit cards and cash are not accepted.
  • If your licence is not in the Latin alphabet, an international driving permit and, if you are not a Turkish citizen, your passport are required.
  • No prepayment required; you can pay the rental by credit card at the office when you pick up the car.

For travellers from abroad and expatriate Turks

Most of our guests from Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and other European countries ask for an automatic car. On EU driving licences, code 78 means the driver may only drive cars with automatic transmission. If your licence shows this code, be sure to choose an automatic car when booking.

Foreign licences written in the Latin alphabet are sufficient to rent a car in Turkey. If yours uses a different alphabet, bring an international driving permit and your passport. Our website is available in Turkish, English and German, and you can view prices in Turkish lira, euros, dollars or pounds using the currency selector at the top of the page. Payment and the deposit are made at pick-up with a credit card in your name. For documents, deposit and driving in Turkey, read our guide to car rental at İzmir Airport for travellers from Germany for all the details.

Spending your summer holiday at home and need a car for a few weeks? Also check the daily equivalent of a 30-day rental. You pick up the car at the airport when you land and return it there when you leave.

Finding an automatic car in summer

Between June and September the number of visitors to İzmir and the surrounding holiday areas rises sharply, and demand for automatic cars peaks. If your dates are fixed, booking early improves your chances of getting the car group you want. Prices vary by date and length of rental; to see the current price, simply choose your dates in the form at the top of the page. As no prepayment is required, you can book now and pay when you pick up the car.

What to know about driving in Turkey

In Turkey you drive on the right and the rules are largely similar to the rest of Europe. Still, drivers from abroad should note a few points:

  • Speed limits: General limits for cars are 50 km/h in towns, 90 km/h on rural roads, 110 km/h on dual carriageways and 120 km/h on motorways. If a sign shows a different limit, follow the sign; speed checks are frequent in towns and on motorways.
  • Seat belts: Seat belts are mandatory in the front and back seats.
  • Alcohol: Drink-driving is a criminal offence and also voids all protection packages. Damage caused while driving under the influence is not covered by any protection package.
  • Phone: Holding a phone while driving is prohibited; for navigation use a phone holder or the car's own screen.
  • Junctions and roundabouts: Roundabouts are common in İzmir; follow the signs and road markings for right of way.

Fines for breaking traffic rules and passing through the wrong lane on bridges or motorways are charged to the credit card of the renter named in the contract, plus a service fee on top of the fine. Following the rules is best for your safety and your budget.
